Forty-Nine Malnourished Horses Arrive at Harmony Equine Center

The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center recently received 49 malnourished horses from the Colorado Department of Agriculture (CDA).

The emaciated equines were voluntarily surrendered by their owner to CDA and transported to the Harmony Equine Center with the assistance of the Colorado Humane Society, a League department that investigates cases of animal abuse and neglect.

Extremely underweight and infested with internal parasites, the horses needed immediate medical attention. Since arriving at Harmony, they have been receiving nourishing feed and necessary veterinary care. The malnourished horses may require months of physical rehabilitation and professional training before they are healthy and ready to be adopted to loving owners.

“Many horses are going to need a substantial amount of time to recover and we are currently monitoring them very closely,” said Garret Leonard, director of the Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center. “We expect to invest more than $100,000 in the rehabilitation and recovery of these emaciated horses.”

The Dumb Friends League Harmony Equine Center is a private rehabilitation and adoption facility for horses, ponies, donkeys and mules that have been removed from owners’ care by law enforcement authorities. Harmony also accepts privately-owned horses in need of rehoming and serves as a centralized hub where horses from humane societies and rescue groups in the Midwest and southwestern United States can receive training and rehoming.
